A Coach for Christmas
- Julie Christensen
As you go about busily preparing for the holiday season, seeking out bargains, and shopping for
that perfect gift for the special people in your life, have you considered a gift for yourself?
When the end of one year approaches it is not unusual for people to think about what they can do
to support their pending New Year's resolutions. Statistics show us that the average time it takes
a person to break a new year's resolution is two weeks to one month. John Assaraf, one of the
leading optimum performance experts in the world says that "People renege on their resolutions
99% of the time within very short order."
What would you like to do for yourself in the coming year? Lose weight? Live a healthier lifestyle?
Change careers? Become more emotionally fit? Be better at relationships? Make more money?
Perhaps what you need is a coach for Christmas. Coaching is defined as: inspiring an individual
or team to produce a desired result through personalized teaching, expanding awareness and designing
environments. Coaching gives people the boost they need to get from where they are to where they
want to be.
Thousands of people have hired a coach to kick a stalled career into high gear, to stay on top of
mounting responsibilities, to take the next big step on the leadership path, and to handle
difficult and important relationships. Coaching can even be applied to specific challenges
like anger and stress management. Seasoned business coaches provide personalized, consistently-focused
coaching to help individuals reach their professional goals. Coaches can help individuals discover
and leverage their strengths, recognize obstacles to success, and identify a course of action to
help them maximize performance.
There is a different type of coach to suit different needs and challenges. Executive Coaching
develops high performing leaders. Often executives need an objective, neutral sounding board to
discuss challenges, opportunities and their perspective. Coaching gives executives and managers
the opportunity to step away from their day-to-day routine and effectively strategize on how they
can reach beyond where they are currently. Professional Development Coaching is similar to
executive coaching but is not limited to people working at the executive level. This type of
coaching is suitable for individuals who would like to take their career to the next level.
Career Development/Transition Coaching is for individuals needing and/or wanting movement from
their current position. Career coaching helps individuals to utilize their strengths, to see
where they may have blind spots and to identify a course of action. A Career coach can assist
with the daunting task of building a portfolio, crafting a dynamic resume reflective of new
career goals, and to seek out opportunities in which to explore career options.
The benefits of coaching are too many to mention. In the past two years of working with a coach,
I have managed to finish writing my second book, lose 40 lbs., take up some activities that
bring me a high level of fulfillment, and to expand my business significantly. As a coach,
I have had the privilege of helping others to define what is truly important to them, to set
goals and reach them, and to reconcile broken relationships through intensive self-examination
and personal change. In the face of this coming year, why not give yourself a gift that could
change your life? Get a coach for Christmas.
