Creating Peace

Getting Started on Your Peace Cloth

Start by gathering pieces of cloth from family, friends or groups.

  1. Each piece of cloth has special meaning to the contributor, such as a piece of clothing received from a family member or friend.
  2. An intention is set to place ones' "Vision of Peace" into the piece of cloth, thus infusing it with a feeling of what "Peace on Earth" would feel like to you. You may like to say a peace prayer while holding your piece of cloth.
  3. Both children and adults can contribute to the square. The project can be a lesson in joy and cooperation.

Sewing Your Square

Here are some suggestions and some specifics for developing the cloth:

  • Each individual square should be exactly 36 inches by 36 inches (91.5cm by 91.5cm) when hemmed. Your square can be made of whatever fabric you choose. Please back it with a square of muslin (white cloth) that we will provide.
  • Each square may contain fragments of material, writing, names, prayers or drawings. The fabric (s) can be cut, folded, shiny, bright, soft, or crinkly. It can be glued, sewn by machine, by hand, or quilted.
  • Writing may be machine embroidered, hand sewn or made with color crayon, dyes, feathers, glitter pens, markers or fabric paint. The possibilities are limitless!

When you have completed your square(s), you will send it to The Golden Light Centre for Well-Being. Contact Jane at goldenlightcentre@rogers.com. We will gather all the squares from various individuals and groups and will join them together.

See the Vision!

Can you see this cloth growing over a mile long? We now have 10 squares completed. Jane Booth and Nancy O'Neil, project coordinators, hope many people can. They are very excited by the vision of a beautiful, creative cloth of peace growing and growing!. Open your heart and thoughts to create ideas of how this new cloth can grow to show how much you care. This cloth was inspired by the Cloth of Many Colors gathered by James Twyman of The Beloved Community, a peace organization, that grew to almost one mile long.
