Quest for Peace - A Wish is a Prayer
- By Melanie Calitri Holden
"Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete." - John 16:24
The best way to accept the truth of the above bit of scripture, is to experience it yourself. The next best way,
is to hear a story about someone who is a living testimony to this very special promise from God. I would like to
introduce you to my revered teacher, my daughter, Yana.
I have a little story to tell, and I hope you will take the time to read it through to the end. It might just change
your belief about what is possible, and as is written...
"Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." - Mark 11:24
...faith is everything.
Yana's Wish
One afternoon, Yana and I were driving back from the airport, having delivered some friends to their plane.
"Why don't I ever get to go on an airplane, Mom? How come CJ gets to fly and not me?" whined Yana.
"Be careful what you wish for sweetie," I replied.
Yana thought about this for a moment, then declared, "I wish to go on an airplane to somewhere fun." She
paused, then added, "And if I could go anywhere, I would choose Chicago."
"Why Chicago?" I asked.
"Because Rachel just went there to visit her uncle, and it sounds like fun!"
We drove in silence for the few remaining minutes home. When we pulled in our driveway, I spotted an envelope on
our front steps. FedEx® had come while we were out.
"Who's it for?" asked Yana, curiously.
"It's for you!" I said in surprise. Who would send my eight year old daughter a letter by Federal
Express? She opened it up and read, ""Build-A-Bear Workshop® is pleased to inform you that you are a
winner in our Huggable Hero Contest for inspiring other children to help animals." We read the letter together
and stopped, dumbfounded at the line reading, "You will be required to fly on a plane somewhere in the United
States for a photo shoot for our Huggable Heroes Calendar."
We stared at each other, until Yana broke the spell. "Cool," she said in a matter-of-fact voice. I laughed
out loud! Of course, she knew her wish would come true. I, however, never expected her wish to be granted within
minutes of declaring it. But I should have known better. After all, she's been doing this all her life!
Six weeks later, Yana and I stood at the airline ticket counter on our way to St. Louis, Missouri, with a plane
change scheduled in Philadelphia. "Your flight has been cancelled," said the ticket lady, "but I can
get you on another flight, an hour later, that routes through Chicago."
A quiet whisper at my elbow, "I did that."
I looked down at Yana. "What?" I asked.
"I did that, Mommy. I wished to go to Chicago!"
We swept through Chicago, long enough for Yana to tell her friends she'd been there and then off to St. Louis,
where the Build-A-Bear family rolled out the red carpet for my amazing daughter, and nine other children as
dedicated as she to making this world a little more like heaven.
